 Lucy Rutten
I am Lucy Rutten, a scientist with over 25 years of experience in biomedical, biochemical and pharmaceutical research. My career has taken me from academia to industry and now back to academia at Leiden University. Each step has shaped how I think about science, health and real-world impact, and I am now working in a research field that truly excites me, at the intersection of medical science, biology, and psychology.
Throughout my work in protein technology and vaccine development, including the design of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine, prevention and risk reduction have been central themes.
Following a master class by Eline in 2024, my focus expanded toward lifestyle interventions like nutrition, physical activity, and sleep, and their effects on the brain. I believe that early support of physiology can help reduce risk, enhance resilience, and influence disease trajectories.
Within the Lifestyle Brain Interaction (LBI) research group, I focus on metabolic and ketogenic interventions as supportive strategies for brain health. I am involved in projects such as KetoSwiss, exploring metabolic support in early Alzheimer’s disease, and KETASE, which studies ketogenic therapy in autism spectrum disorder. What motivates me most is connecting molecular biology to real-world health and translating complex physiology into evidence-based strategies for brain health.
